DURATION: 3 days

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who normally operate or are based permanently on an offshore installation or facility and are part of the emergency response team.

PRE-REQUISITES: None

DESCRIPTION:
Maritime personnel will be trained to be able to confidently & effectively use personal protective & fire fighting equipment in response to a fire emergency on board a vessel or offshore facility.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Use of portable fire extinguishing equipment
  • Use of self contained breathing apparatus
  • Extinguish small fires—electrical, propane and oil in simulation exercises
  • Extinguish extensive fires with water using jet and spray patterns
  • Extinguish fires with foam, powder and other chemical agents
  • Fight fires in smoke filled enclosed spaces wearing self contained breathing apparatus
  • Extinguish fires in simulated accommodation areas, engine room
  • Extinguish ‘B Class fires
  • Conduct a rescue in a smoke filled space wearing breathing apparatus.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situation involving fire
Fight and extinguish fires.

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in AMSA Table A-VI/1-2 Minimum Standard of Competence in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.

DELIVERY METHOD:
8 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, desktop activities and discussion.
16 hours of practical components using fire fighting equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
