DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who may be required to don the relevant personal protective clothing to respond to an incident in the workplace involving hazardous substances.

PRE-REQUISITES:

PUAFIR201B Prevent injury
PUAFIR207B Operate breathing apparatus

CO-REQUISITE UNITS:

PUAFIR306B Render hazardous materials incidents safe

This co-requisite is delivered during this course.

DESCRIPTION:
This unit covers the competency required to select, don and safely operate the appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment at a fire and at an incident involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances. "Hazardous Materials" is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated the selection, donning, operation and maintenance of protective clothing and equipment using safe working practices and agency procedures.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

PUAFIR308B/01 Select and don protective clothing
PUAFIR308B/02 Don and test protective equipment
PUAFIR308B/03 Work in area of operations
PUAFIR308B/04 Complete operations

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PUAFIR308B Employ Personal Protection at a Hazardous Materials Incident and PUAFIR306B Render Hazardous Materials Incidents Safe.

Note: Trainees unable to meet course pre-requisites will ONLY be issued with a Certificate of Training and will be unable to participate in some practical scenarios.

DELIVERY METHOD:
3 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
5 hours of practical components using PPE such as gas tight suits, splash suits and SCBA in a range of simulated emergency response scenarios.
