COMMONLY KNOWN AS: HLO

DURATION: 1 day

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel working offshore who are responsible for the duties of Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) as set out in Clause 215 of the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act (1982) for helicopter operations on offshore platforms and mobile units. The course is also based on the APPEA guidelines for Management of Offshore Helicopter Operations appea.com.au .

PRE-REQUISITES: None (for certification).
However, to work offshore as an HLO, current industry practice has shown that the HLO should have experience in offshore helicopter operations. To be fully qualified as a HLO it is recommended that the person have current qualifications in:

  • Dangerous Goods Awareness Certification
  • Senior First Aid
  • Offshore / Maritime Fire Fighting and BA FTMO at ERGT
  • Helideck Fire Fighting and Rescue HDFF at ERGT
  • Offshore Helicopter Refuelling Refuelling at ERGT
  • Aircraft Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency (AROCP)
  • Emergency Response Team Leader (highly recommended) ERTL at ERGT

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations require helideck crew to hold Dangerous Goods Awareness Certificate.

DESCRIPTION:
Provide trainees with the knowledge and skills to confidently and competently carry out the duties of Helicopter Landing Officer.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Offshore helicopter operations and general safety
  • Features of Helideck landing areas
  • Helideck safety equipment and procedures
  • Role of the HLO and Helideck team
  • Communication procedures
  • Helideck emergencies
  • Basic meteorology
  • Relevant Legislation & Acts.

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees will demonstrate/explain/identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this unit of competency will involve simulated scenarios involving helicopter operations.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion trainees will be issued with a Certificate of Training in Helicopter Landing Officer.

DELIVERY METHOD:
3 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
5 hours of practical components using specialised equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
