DURATION: 3 days
DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who are required to launch, operate and recover a fast rescue craft.
PRE-REQUISITES:
The course is also AMSA approved in compliance with STCW95 for Minimum Standard of Competence in Fast Rescue Boats. To receive AMSA approved certification trainees must present a current AMSA Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft.
DESCRIPTION:
This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively launch, operate and recover a fast rescue craft.
CONTENT:
It is essential that competence is demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:
- Maintain the fast rescue craft and its equipment for operations
- Identify and use appropriate craft and emergency equipment
- Prepare fast rescue craft and crew for operations
- Complete the fast rescue craft launch ensuring crew safety
- Manoeuvre the fast rescue craft in prevailing sea and weather conditions according to operational requirements
- Operate engine, navigation, steering, communication and other auxiliary equipment in accordance with manufacturers specifications and operational requirements
- Respond to and rectify in-boat emergencies
- Follow appropriate search patterns
- Approach the casualty and determine the extent of the injuries
- Operate casualty recover equipment
- Recover the casualty using recovery procedures appropriate to the injuries sustained.
- Apply appropriate emergency first aid procedures
- Transfer the casualty to a place of safety using procedures appropriate to the injuries sustained
- Recover and secure the fast rescue craft and its equipment.
ELEMENT OF COMPETENCY:

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees will demonstrate/explain/identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities. Assessment for this Unit of Competency will involve an operation of a fast rescue boat.
CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competence, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in AMSA Table A-VI/2-2 Minimum Standard of Competence in Fast Rescue Boats.
DELIVERY METHOD:
This course has both theoretical and practical elements. A brief classroom presentation provides trainees with background knowledge that supports the predominantly practical programme.
