DURATION: 1 day

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who need to be able to confidently and efficiently use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for emergency response situation in hazardous environments.

PRE-REQUISITES: None.

CO-REQUISITES:

PUAFIR201B Prevent Injury

Please note this co-requisite is taught during the course.

DESCRIPTION:
This unit covers the competency associated with the operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Appropriately conduct pre-donning tests
  • Correctly don breathing apparatus
  • Operate breathing apparatus
  • Move in reduced visibility and darkness
  • Follow breathing apparatus emergency procedures
  • Ensure organisation’s procedures are followed
  • Correctly remove breathing apparatus
  • Return breathing apparatus to operational status.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

PUAFIR207B/01 Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
PUAFIR207B/02 Don and check breathing apparatus
PUAFIR207B/03 Operate breathing apparatus
PUAFIR207B/04 Conclude operations

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PUAFIR207B Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit and PUAFIR201B Prevent Injury.

DELIVERY METHOD:
3 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
5 hours of practical components using breathing apparatus equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
