DURATION: 0.5 days

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who are not expected to deal with complex casualties or incidents, but to provide an initial response where first aid is required.

PRE-REQUISITES: None

DESCRIPTION:
In this Unit of Competency trainees demonstrate the provision of essential first aid in recognising and responding to an emergency using basic life support measures. In this unit it is assumed the first aider works under supervision, either individually or as part of a team, and/or according to established workplace first aid procedures and policies.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Work individually, under supervision or as part of a first aid team.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

MSAPMOHS220A/01 Assess the situation
MSAPMOHS220A/02 Apply basic first aid techniques
MSAPMOHS220A/03 Communicate details of the incident

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate. Competence may be demonstrated working individually, under supervision or as part of a first aid team.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this Unit of Competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMOHS220A Provide Initial First Aid Response.

DELIVERY METHOD:
1.5 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
2.5 hours of practical components using first aid equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
