Personnel who are members of an emergency response team or who require an introductory course to incidents involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

This co-requisite is delivered during this course.
DESCRIPTION:
In this Unit of Competency trainees demonstrate what is required to safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials. ’Hazardous Materials’ is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances.
CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:
- Identify hazardous materials
- Implement appropriate standard operating procedures
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation
- Demonstrate safe working practices
- Assist in the establishment of incident control
- Contain and recover hazardous materials
- Undertake decontamination procedures.

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.
CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PUAFIR306A Render Hazardous Materials Incidents Safe and PUAFIR308A Employ Personal Protection at a Hazardous Materials Incident
Note: Trainees unable to meet course pre-requisites will be issued with a Certificate of Training and will be unable to participate in some practical scenarios.
DELIVERY METHOD:
3 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
5 hours of practical components using PPE such as gas tight suits, splash suits and SCBA in a range of simulated emergency response scenarios.
