COMMONLY KNOWN AS: First Response Fire Fighting

DURATION: 1 day

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who are involved in controlling and extinguishing fires amd require the skills and knowledge of an incident team member. Fires in the workplace will involve considerable radiated heat, smoke and noxious gases, and create hazards from hot materials and debris and possible explosions could occur.

PRE-REQUISITES: None

DESCRIPTION:
This unit of competency is designed to ensure that an appropriate response to fire incidents in onshore and offshore situations/emergencies is achieved. This may be the first response to contain a fire until external emergency services arrive, it may be a response with support from external emergency services, or it may be the total response.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Identify different types of fires
  • Select and use of appropriate extinguishing agent
  • Apply of defensive fire fighting tactics and techniques
  • Select and use of appropriate protective clothing.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

MSAPMOHS212A/01 Respond to fire alarm
MSAPMOHS212A/02 Control/extinguish fire
MSAPMOHS212A/03 Participate in ancillary operations
MSAPMOHS212A/04 Conclude firefighting operations

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this Unit of Competency, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMOHS212A Undertake First Response to Fire Incidents.

DELIVERY METHOD:
3 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, desktop activities and discussion.
5 hours of practical components using fire fighting equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
