DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who are required to undertake vertical rescue operations as a member of a rescue team.

DESCRIPTION:
In this unit of competency trainees demonstrate the skills and knowledge to undertake vertical rescue operations as a member of a rescue team.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Establish safe systems to gain access to and recover casualties
  • Extricate casualty minimising further injury or discomfort while conducting rescue operation
  • Apply safe work practices.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

PUASAR004B/01 Prepare for and respond to vertical rescue
PUASAR004B/02 Assess scene
PUASAR004B/03 Establish vertical rescue system
PUASAR004B/04 Perform vertical rescue
PUASAR004B/05 Terminate vertical rescue operations

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees learning outcomes will be assessed using direct observation, oral and/or written questions, and/or use of a workbook, and practical exercises as appropriate.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this unit of competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PUASAR004B Undertake Vertical Rescue. If the pre-requisite is not achieved then a Certificate of Training in PUASAR004A Undertake Vertical Rescue will be issued.

DELIVERY METHOD:
12 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
20 hours of practical components using vertical rescue equipment in a range of simulated rescue scenarios.
