DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel who require knowledge and understanding of extinguishing fires in their workplace.

PRE-REQUISITES: None

DESCRIPTION:
In this Unit of Competency trainees demonstrate how various portable fire protection products are used in emergency situations. Product demonstrations include the use of a portable fire extinguisher, a fire hose reel and a fire blanket.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course with the ability of the trainees to understand:

  • The theory of fire including the Triangle of Combustion.
  • The implications of incorrect use of fire extinguishers and hose reels on classes of fire
  • How fire can be spread by conduction, convection, radiation and direct burning
  • Why cooking oil and fat fires require special attention
  • Basic methods of locating a fire
  • The meaning of secondary damage
  • How water pressure influences the discharge distance for hose reels.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY:

PRMPFES05B/01 Use portable fire extinguishers to extinguish a simulated fire
PRMPFES05B/02 Demonstrate correct usage of a fire hose reel
PRMPFES05B/03 Demonstrate correct usage of a fire blanket

ASSESSMENT:
Trainees will be assessed against the learning outcomes using oral questioning, written quiz, and practical demonstration using CO2 and DCP extinguishers, a hose reel and fire blanket on small controlled fires. Due to safety and environmental factors, methods of extinguishing Class D, E and F fires are restricted to oral explanations and role-play/simulations only.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this Unit of Competency trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in PRMPFES05B Use Portable Fire Fighting Equipment.

DELIVERY METHOD:
1.5 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.
2.5 hours of practical components using fire fighting equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.
