DURATION: 0.5 days

DESIGNED FOR:
This is an introductory course designed for personnel that may have to deal with hazardous chemicals (dangerous goods) while working in the wine industry.

PREREQUISITES: None

DESCRIPTION:
This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge required for product identification, first response procedures for dealing with chemical incidents, personal protection, individual and team responsibilities and basic medical hazards.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

Product Identification and Segregation:

  • Understand the legislative responsibilities for dealing with dangerous goods
  • List the nine classifications of dangerous goods
  • Describe the purpose of the “UN” number
  • Apply the “UN” number to find product details
  • Interpret Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Interpret the HAZCHEM scale
  • Don personal protection when containing a minor workplace chemical spill
  • List six areas of information found on the emergency information panel.

Housekeeping Spills (In conjunction with Perth Petroleum Services):

  • Describe the procedures to be taken in the event of a minor hazardous spill in the workplace prior to the arrival of emergency services
  • First person on the scene of a hazardous spill.

ASSESSMENT:
Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and written assessment. Practical assessment in the completion of a variety of tasks involving dangerous goods.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this Unit of Competency trainees will be issued with a Certificate of Training in Dangerous Goods Awareness.

DELIVERY METHOD:
This course is delivered by ERGT in conjunction with Perth Petroleum Services. This course is primarily classroom based. Trainees will have to complete some practical exercises to demonstrate an understanding of the course material.
