Enter Confined Spaces (ECS)

Enter Confined Spaces

Working in confined spaces can be one of the most high risk tasks on offshore and onshore facilities. This course provides trainees with the opportunity to practice ECS in simulated environments, giving them the knowledge to identify potential ECS tasks and the associated risks as well as preventive safety measures to ensure a safe working environment for the entire team. The skills learnt will be critical in a trainee’s ability to approach ECS tasks safely.

DURATION:
2 days

COURSE CODE:
MSAPMPER205C

DESIGNED FOR:
Enter Confined Space is designed for personnel who are required to enter a confined space as part of their usual work routine, and who also have responsibility of being the Permit Holder or Stand-by person.

DESCRIPTION:
This competency unit covers the control of entry to confined spaces, for maintenance, servicing of vessels or other necessary reasons. Work in/entry to confined spaces shall conform to relevant legislation and AS2865, or its authorised update or replacement.

It is expected that all persons entering a confined space, and the standby person, will be competent to enter confined space.

Trainees will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to safely work under supervision in a confined space, including the selection, use and maintenance of personal protective equipment, understand the permit system, know the limitations of the permit under which they are working, and comply with all the requirements of the permit.

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Identify confined spaces and their hazards
  • Develop risk control procedures, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and permit systems
  • Prepare the confined space for safe entry
  • Operate gas detection & ventilation equipment
  • Select, use and maintain height safety equipment for vertical access & rescue
  • Select, use and maintain respiratory protective equipment, including filter-type respirators & external air-supply (long-line)
  • Demonstrate basic emergency preparedness

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY FOR ENTER CONFINED SPACE:

  • MSAPMPER205C/01 Assess confined space for entry
  • MSAPMPER205C/02 Use safety equipment and PPE
  • MSAPMPER205C/03 Control confined space entry
  • MSAPMPER205C/04 Conclude confined space operations

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCE FOR WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH AN ISSUED PERMIT

  • MSAPMPER200C/01 Apply for permit(s)
  • MSAPMPER200C /02 Identify the scope of the permit

DELIVERY METHOD:
7 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion.

9 hours of practical components using specialised equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.

ASSESSMENT:
Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and completion of a workbook. Trainees will also be required to demonstrate competence through practical scenarios simulating work tasks requiring entry to a confined space.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of this course, trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMPER205B Enter Confined Space and MSAPMPER200B Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit.

PRE-REQUISITES:
MSAPMPER200B Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit (delivered as part of the course on Day 1)
