Gas Test Atmospheres - Authorised Gas Tester (GTA)

MSAPMOHS217A

GTA
Trainees working on an Oil and Gas facility will often be working in close proximity to pressure vessels and pipe work containing flammable or toxic gases. Fixed automatic monitoring systems aboard offshore facilities are in place to provide continuous safety surveillance, but for specific tasking and some general work practices trainees will be provided with a Personal Gas Monitor (PGM) to maximise safety. GTA gives trainees the understanding and skills to safely conduct testing and interpret readings utilising a PGM.

DURATION:
1 day

DESIGNED FOR:
Personnel intending to become an Authorised Gas Tester (AGT) within the workplace. It develops the skills to use electronic gas test apparatus to determine if an area is safe for proposed work.

DESCRIPTION:
In a typical scenario an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation

CONTENT:
It is essential that competence be demonstrated throughout the duration of the course:

  • Why monitor atmospheres?
  • Different types of gas test equipment
  • Target gases and gas behaviour
  • Prepare and plan for monitoring
  • Operate gas test equipment
  • Take precautions to safe guard health
  • Take atmospheric readings
  • Maintain equipment.

ELEMENTS OF COMPETENCY

  • MSAPMOHS217A/01 Prepare for gas testing
  • MSAPMOHS217A/02 Test gas
  • MSAPMOHS217A/03 Maintain equipment

DELIVERY METHOD:
4 hours of classroom theory PowerPoint presentations, including audio-visual material, practical desktop activities and discussion. 4 hours of practical components using specialised equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios.

ASSESSMENT:
Assessment of underpinning knowledge will be by way of oral questioning and through the completion of a workbook. Trainees will also be required to demonstrate competence through practical scenarios requiring gas-testing techniques.

CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSAPMOHS217A Gas Test Atmospheres.

PRE-REQUISITES:
None.
