Emergency Management at Sea (EMAS)

The Emergency Management at Sea course is designed to train vessel or ships Masters on Emergency Management at Sea, and provide them with effective mechanisms and tools to combat incidents in accordance with elements of TDMMF507C.

DURATION:
2-day program for up to four Masters

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Emergency Management at Sea covers the role of the Master of a vessel as the Incident Commander to manage critical incidents at sea on a vessel.

ASSESSMENT CONTENT:
A range of emergency scenarios will take place to ensure the standards of performance are covered. Each scenario will be based around a major incident, whilst the vessel is underway, chosen from:

  • Loss of propulsion
  • Onboard fire or explosion
  • Man overboard
  • Helicopter incident
  • Medivac
  • Oil spill
  • Multiple casualties
  • Collision
  • Wave damage
  • Loss of stability

COMPETENCY:
This Unit of Competence is concerned principally with emergencies involving large numbers of people and which by their very nature are threats to life, the vessel or the environment. ERGT Australia will deliver and assess candidates against element 5 of TDMMF507C Develop Emergency and Damage Control Plans and Handle Emergency Situations on board a Vessel. A Statement of Attainment will be issued once evidence to support the other elements is provided.

METHOD OF TRAINING:
2 days for simulator familiarisation practice sessions, including assessment. Trainees who successfully complete this course will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for TDMMF507C on completion of all elements.

ASSESSMENT PRE-REQUISITES:
Trainees should have comprehensive experience operating on a vessel and have had the opportunity to take control of the response as Incident Commander in an offshore environment. Documentation for the provision of evidence to support Elements 1,2,3,4 & 6 demonstrating understanding of onboard emergency procedures and control processes is required. ERGT Australia will provide templates for the completion of the pre-requisite elements prior to the course.
RE-QUALIFICATION:
ERGT recommends requalification takes place every two to three years.
